Dry tooling involves the use of ice axes and crampons to ascend climbs that are not covered by snow or ice. A relatively new climbing discipline, dry tooling evolved from hard mixed climbing where sections of rock had to be climbed to link up sections of ice. Initially envisaged as a means of practicing and training winter climbing techniques, dry tooling has now become accepted as a pursuit in itself.

Indoor dry tooling is a further evolution of the theme and offers a completely different experience to regular indoor climbing. Designed to allow climbers to replicate the physical action of using tools outdoors, whether for dry tooling or winter climbing, indoor dry tooling uses different muscle groups compared to regular indoor climbing and presents much lower stresses on finger tendons. In addition to providing a fun physical workout, indoor dry tooling is also an ideal opportunity to introduce beginners to basic ice climbing techniques.

When

Big Rock will be running 1.5 hour dry tooling workshops from 7:00pm - 8:30pm followed by a 1.5 hour open dry tooling sessions for those with experience.

Please contact us for further details.

Safety

Indoor dry tooling is a higher risk activity and additional safety measures are required.

Regular climbing shoes are used rather than crampons (to prevent damage to the climbing wall and the belayer!) and tools are usually used leashless, allowing the climber to swap tools from hand to hand, let go and shake out.

It is mandatory that both climber and belayer wear a helmet and spectators must remain well clear of the climbing area to prevent injury from falling tools. The climber must use a helmet with face protection and must wear gloves to further minimise the risk of injury. Wearing long sleeves and long trousers is also recommended.
