If you are interested in teaching or supervising climbing, Big Rock Climbing Centre is now offering the Climbing Wall Award (CWA) scheme training and assessment courses.

 

The Climbing Wall Award is specifically designed for climbers who wish to supervise and be responsible for groups at indoor and outdoor climbing walls. The Climbing Wall Award covers the supervision and management of top rope climbing and bouldering, and covers techniques such as group supervision, climbing equipment suitability, climbing safety and basic climbing movement skills. Please note that the CWA scheme excludes the teaching of lead climbing.

 

The 2-day Big Rock Climbing Wall Award course also includes the optional top-roping and abseil module for supervisors who want to run group abseiling sessions.

When

 

The Climbing Wall Award scheme comprises of a 2 day training course, a period of consolidation followed by a 1 day assessment. The Abseil Module is included in the main training and assessment courses.

 

Day 1: 9:00am - 5:00pm, Evening session 6:00pm - 7:00pm.

Day 2: 9:00am - 5:00pm.

Price

 

Climbing Wall Award Training £125 (including entry at both walls used)

Climbing Wall Award Assessment £90.

Please note that all candidates should be registered with one of the four Mountain Leader Training Boards ( LinkMLT) prior to the course.

 

 

Training Course Structure

 

During the Climbing Wall Award course we aim to visit 2 different climbing walls.

 

The Climbing Wall Award syllabus include personal skills, group skills, climbing equipment selection and suitability, climbing safety and movement skills and many other issues.

 

At the end of the training course each candidate will be de-briefed and given an indication of what is needed before they present themselves for assessment.

 

What you need to bring

 

  • Completed registration and log book.
  • Suitable clothing.
  • Packed lunch (optional).
  • Personal climbing kit*.
 

*Can be provided on the training course if necessary.

 

Experience before the Training Course

  • You need to be a climber with at least 6 months climbing experience.
  • You must register with one of the four Mountain Leader Training Boards ( LinkMLT).
  • You need to be affiliated to, or a full member of the BMC.
  • You must have climbed on artificial walls on at least 15 occasions, visited at least 3 different walls and successfully led on walls.

 

Experience before the Assessment

  • Consolidation period (feedback from trainer).
  • Led a minimum of 40 climbs.
  • Assisted with the supervision of climbing for at least 15 sessions at a variety of climbing walls or towers.
